Why I Started a Travel Blog on Substack

One of the best things about being a copywriter is that you learn something new with almost every assignment. One of the worst things? Some clients “edit” your words, changing them back into corporate jargon, making those assignments unfit for your portfolio—the portfolio you use to get new clients.

When I started spending more time in Istria, Croatia, there were many reasons to begin writing my own travel blog. Not only could I showcase my writing chops, I could also return to writing for pleasure, capturing all of the big feelings that come with being a part-time expat.

The blog is called Accidental Istrian and you can learn why I named it that in my very first post on Substack. Or, if you’re in the market for a travel content writer, you can get a feel for how I might approach a locale in these posts: Crazy for Konobas, Surprising Things Croatians Have Asked Me, an American, or Romancing the Stone.

Substack, by the way, is an amazing platform for writers and journalists who want to share their work with the world and monetize it directly. If you like what you read, please consider subscribing to Accidental Istrian.
